TESTIMONIALS

January 2003
The Office of Mine Action Initiatives
and Partnerships of the U.S. Department of
State's Bureau of Political-Military Affairs is pleased
to count Global Care Unlimited
among its public-private partners in humanitarian mine action.
Since early 2000, the U.S. Department of State and Global
Care Unlimited have worked together on
community-based, service-learning mine action projects that
productively engage young American students in humanitarian
projects to mitigate the threat of landmines to civilians
in foreign countries.
To date, select students from Tenafly
Middle School in Tenafly, New Jersey,
working under the auspices of their own non-governmental
organization - - Global Care Unlimited - - and the general
guidance of their teacher, Mr. Mark Hyman, have helped to
support the demining of two villages in Bosnia-Herzegovina,
hosted an educational mine action conference in Bergen County,
and funded job-training for a Nicaraguan landmine survivor
in cooperation with the Organization of American States
(OAS).
These extraordinary students and their organization have
also inspired a key dramatic passage in an episode from
the television pilot series, "War Child," directed
by Bob Altman and funded by Hallmark Entertainment.
Mr. Hyman and his students are now considering
further projects to support the
rehabilitation of landmine survivors in Nicaragua and in
the Balkans.
Thanks to the efforts of Mark Hyman and
his committed students, we have
learned of the incredible potential for good works in humanitarian
mine action and other humanitarian endeavors that lies within
the noble young hearts of middle school
students throughout the United States. We look forward to
further collaborative efforts in mine action with Mr. Hyman
and the students of Global Care Unlimited. We also
commend their initiative as a model that may be emulated
by upper elementary, middle school, high school and college
students in the United States and other countries.
Sincerely,
James F. Lawrence
